Rothenburg Imperial City Festival – Reichsstadt Festtage

2 – 4 September 2022

About Rothenburg Imperial City Festival

Imperial Festival is the sign of the so-called good old days.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a tiny little town with barely 11.000 inhabitants, but one of the best known in Germany – because of its unique medieval architecture.

With its old history, this idyllic place has attracted many artists for centuries, with beautiful facades, art pieces and a unique and specific atmosphere.

At the beginning of September, Rothenburg is transformed into a unique open-air theatre, the Imperial City Festival.

Here they call it “Reichsstadt-Festtage”.

Hundreds of people from the town and surrounding areas are members of historical groups.

At this festival, they try reviving that old atmosphere and re-establishing traditional professions.

Imperial City Festival tries to revive its history completely from old equipment to original fashion.

On Friday evening, there’s usually a splendid torchlight procession with thundering cannons and a spectacular glittering display from the brand firework.

The whole town is inside the festival, and the show continues with the light-hearted festivities the following day.

The central point of happening is the Market square in the middle of the city.

Interesting to add is that there are plenty of culinary offers to try, from the finest wines to traditional dishes for this region of Germany.
