Gouda by Candlelight
In December the Town Hall is beautifully lightened up and a big Christmas tree is erected on the square.
Illumination of the city centre starts with a Candlelight night in December. (13 December in 2019)
From early afternoon till late at night thousands of people gather on the Market Square.
Organised walks, music, dancing and street theatre make this event even more special.
The lights go out between 19 o’clock and 20 o’clock around the Market Square with the Town Hall, and surrounding houses putting candles on their windowsills to provide light.
At the same time the lights on the big Norwegian Christmas tree, in front of the Town Hall, are switched on to transform the Market Square into a winter wonderland.
The mayor reads a Christmas story and the people in the square sing Christmas songs together.
Christmas events continue throughout December until the beginning of January.
Concerts are held in the St. Jan’s church, which is also lit up so you can admire the big stained glass windows from the outside.
