Gouda by Candlelight
In December, the Town Hall is beautifully lightened up, and a giant Christmas tree is on the square.
Illumination of the city centre starts with a Candlelight night in December.
Thousands of people gather on Market Square from early afternoon till late at night.
Organised walks, music, dancing and street theatre make this event even more special.
The lights go out between 19 and 20 o’clock around the Market Square, with the Town Hall and surrounding houses putting candles on their windowsills to provide light.

At the same time, the lights on the big Norwegian Christmas tree in front of the Town Hall are switched on to transform the Market Square into a winter wonderland.
The mayor reads a Christmas story, and the people in the square sing Christmas songs together.

Concerts are held in St. Jan’s church, which is also lit up so you can admire the big stained glass windows from the outside.
