Jerez de la Frontera, Spain
Sherry, Horses and a Colorful Festival
Jerez de la Frontera is great to combining with a visit to Cadiz. In Jerez you’ll find some of the world’s finest Sherry. It is also well known for horse shows. Bodega Williams & Humbert is one of the oldest and biggest bodegas in Jerez. Huge caves where over 50.000 barrels are stored, slowly maturing to perfection. Stored in pyramid shape the sherry needs at least five years to mature. The lowest barrels are emptied only one third, then filled up from the one above and so on to guarantee the continuity of quality and flavor. A part of the caves is a museum which exhibits interesting tools, scales and seals as they were used in the past century.
Jerez de la Frontera is the seat of the Royal School of Equestrian Art.
You can enjoy the show and performance of the high art of dressage in an adjacent arena.
The horses used are bred locally by the monks of a monastery called La Cartuja on the outskirts of Jerez.
The monks have done so for over 600 years.
These horses which have a good part of Arab blood are smaller than the pure race Arabs.
They are very strong and extremely agile which makes them particularly suitable for dressage.
A particularity is that they are all black when they are born.
Then over five years they change color, some of them even turning pure white.
It´s beautiful to watch a symphony of rider and horse welded together in something that looks like a horse ballet.
