Girona Flower Festival with more than a hundred individual displays.
Whole streets become art installations, accompanied by music, light, fountains, and thousands of flowers’ intoxicating scent.
Usually, at the same time, the Girona A Capella festival is running, so you can enjoy two festivals at the same time.
So what will you see at the Girona Flower Festival?
It’s far more intriguing than you might expect from a floral show.
Some displays are as brash and colourful as a carnival, and some are tasteful and minimalist.
Those created by local children are often wonderfully bedraggled, and some are on the precarious boundary between quirky and kitsch.
The Town Hall always comes up with a constructed and dignified display that befits its status and its central location on the Plaça del Vi.
The grand staircase might be bedecked with a cascade of mirrors, formal arrangements of Madonna lilies, or a similarly elegant theme.
It’s testimony to the small-scale community feel of the city that everyone seems to have contributed, however small.
From discreet tubs of marguerites outside doorways to window displays in the shops.
There are some liberal interpretations of the flower-related brief throughout the city, in hidden corners and courtyards, many closed for the rest of the year.
Some are spectacular: embroidered cloths, tapestry, a whole alley of trees made from recycled industrial plastic that looks like a lace forest.
Round a corner; oversize ladybirds march in single file down an ancient stairway. It’s all great fun for a family weekend.
Look out for touches of humour, though. One year, the elaborate wrought iron that decorates the Town Hall entrance was transformed into a moustachioed face, complete with scarlet poppies for hair.
And a popular photo opportunity was a formal square filled with a huge carpet of turf and at one corner an enormous broom, sweeping some colourful floral ‘dust’ out of sight.
Flower cakes, flower dresses, even a flower bed in the window of a furniture shop adds a punning element to an actual bed but made of plants.
Occasionally something is almost unfathomable at the Girona flower festival.
A series of tableaux featuring flowery bicycles, model cars and other transport-related artefacts become more logical when you realize that you’re in a courtyard dedicated to Saint Christopher, patron saint of travellers.

Prices rise for the festival – it’s one of the city’s most popular events – but it’s possible to find a bargain if you book a few months in advance.
Situated only a hundred kilometres from Barcelona, Girona is a perfect place to visit, especially during the Girona Acappella Music festival and Flower festival.
Girona is a lovely travel tip you must discover, and a great excursion from Barcelona, if you are staying there.
Girona is often just a city you arrive by air to run further to Barcelona or other destinations.
Many people, therefore, miss seeing this beautiful city.
It’s more than the Acapella and Flower Festival this city has to offer.
