Dusseldorf Funfair has a long history.
It occurred 690 years ago when the local shooting club, St. Sebastianus, started celebrating its patron saint’s day.
The event starts with one of Germany’s biggest parades.
Over 3,000 marchers make their way through the streets of Düsseldorf.
There are uniformed shooters on horseback and foot, marching bands and other traditional teams.
Today the fair is one of the biggest outdoor celebrations in Germany.
Because of its popularity, around four million visitors are expected to visit Dusseldorf during this funfair.
A highlight at the Dusseldorf Funfair is the historic parade, one of the largest in Germany.
The whole family can enjoy this festival with its state-of-the-art fairground rides.
It wouldn’t be an authentic German festival without the beer tents with costumed servers.
There is also plenty of live music to enjoy.
The fireworks display on the first and last Friday of the Dusseldorf fun fair highlights the event.
The skies above Dusseldorf light up with the spectacular firework display.
A great way to view the fireworks is from a boat trip along the Rhine.
Another funfair high point is the selection of the “Schützenkönig” (otherwise known as the “King of Marksmen”).
The shooting club shooters shoot at a dummy bird raised on a target.
The one who shoots the bird down is awarded the title of King.
The Dusseldorf funfair is traditionally set up on the Oberkassel Rheinwiesen.
It’s a beautiful sight on the banks of the Rhine.
If you want to live right in this lively area, I recommend Barcelona Bed and Breakfast right above an Irish Pub.
The hotel was good value for money with excellent service, lovely breakfast and good beds.
Breidenbacher Hof, a Capella Hotel
It is a fantastic luxury hotel with access to a modern sauna, a gym fitness area, and a great bar and restaurant.
InterContinental Hotel Düsseldorf
Located on Königsallee shopping street in Düsseldorf and offers a large health club, creative cuisine, and soundproofed rooms with elegant décor.
Düsseldorf is home to more than just the annual fun fair.
It’s the capital city of the German district of North Rhine, with a population of over half a million, making it the seventh most populous city in Germany.
It’s well-known for its fashion and shopping, especially along the Königsallee.
Dusseldorf also has a lively art scene, in addition to being an international business and financial centre.
Old and new architecture exist harmoniously, with the Altstadt and the new harbour area offering a range of restaurants and interesting sights to see.
